Over the years, Zambia has seen various improvements in its economy. Corruption and illegal activities have reduced and overall government as well as non-governmental organizations have started to work as per standard procedures. However, the legal system needs improvement, especially in terms of fast-track court and their judgment procedures. Take the example of Zambezi Portland Cement. The case has been lying at the Lusaka High Court for more than nine years. Even though many experts have already provided their views regarding the right judgment, the court is still looking into evidence.
The case is between Dr. Rajan Mahtani, a famous industrialist and serial entrepreneur and the Ventriglias. Dr. Mahtani has successfully established many companies such as Mahtani Group of Industries, Finance Bank Zambia and Finsbury Investments. All his companies are highly regarded in the business industry and have also achieved numerous awards for their progressive activities and charitable works. He has prepared a similar roadmap for Zambezi Portland Cement before the factory was illegally taken over. The Ventriglias, on the other hand, has a negative reputation for being bully and forces. They have also received notoriety across the nation for using goons or bribery for personal profits. Their private company, Ital Terrazzo Limited, is also a mystery and all its business revenue and profits go directly to the Ventriglias.
Coming to the case, the judge handling this case has announced that the case hearing is completed and both parties have been asked to submit their reports and evidence in oral and written forms to the court before December 2017. The court will evaluate all these evidence and based on this time require, the final date for judgment will be announced. Majority of the Zambians, industrialists and experts are positive that Dr. Mahtani will win this case easily. Rest is in the hands of the court.
