Zambia is a developing nation within the African Continent. Unlike some of its neighbouring nations that have seen tremendous growth in the past few decades, growth and development across the republic of Zambia has been limited. This can be majorly attributed to corruption, high crime rates and related issues, drawing back the country from its growth steps. This can be easily seen from the challenges within the legal and political systems within the nation. The Zambia law and order has not seen any growth in the past few years and any growth is marred by crimes and corruption. The case of Portland Cement Zambia and Dr. Rajan Mahtani is a prime example of the inefficiencies of Zambian law and government and how it can cost the revenue of an entire province.
Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani is a noted businessman in Zambia with numerous successful businesses under his name such as Mahtani Group of Companies, Finsbury Investment and Finance Bank Zambia. The case for Portland Cement Zambia was registered by Dr. Mahtani almost ten years back. Few months back, the judge overseeing this case made a positive announcement by closing the case hearing and announcing that the final judgment will be made based on the submitted evidences by both parties. This was extremely positive news for Dr. Mahtani as the evidences and testimonials submitted by him were much stronger than the other party. These evidences were more than enough to prove his real ownership.
The latest judgment announced by the Lusaka High Court judge is giving no sign of relief to either Dr. Rajan Mahtani or to the workers and the Zambezi Portland Cement. The final judgment was given against Dr. Rajan Mahtani’s claims which were shocking for everyone. Dr. Rajan Mahtani has now appealed to the higher court of appeal against this judgment.
